My ‘MAD’ or ‘Māori All Day’ range of apparel, is born out of intergenerational trauma; of a realm where many of our tūpuna were deprived of their Māoritanga. Colonisation and its negative effects on our peoples’, the near extinction of tāmoko, and the suppression of Te Reo Māori, had a traumatic and lasting impact. Some of our tūpuna anglicised their names due to discrimination and lack of opportunities. Our kaumātua were beaten for speaking our language. Instead of being mad, we can instead choose to be MAD. The revitalisation of Māoritanga, of our cultural practices and beliefs is here, and now.
